Domestic travel is growing in popularity.

There is no doubt that Australians love a good holiday. With the country well-positioned for easy travel to Asia, the Pacific and New Zealand, overseas travel is a favourite of many. In fact, according to statistics from Roy Morgan Research, 13.9 per cent (2.7 million) of the national population took an overseas holiday during 2015.

However, when compared to nations around the world, our own country matches up with almost every other destination globally. From tropical North Queensland and windswept Tasmania to dusty Alice Springs, there is something for every traveller across this red land.

Intrastate holidays growing in popularity

Based on a recent Roy Morgan Research survey, the attraction of local holidays and seeing more of this beautiful country is significantly beating visiting overseas countries. In total, 10.3 million went on a domestic holiday for their last break highlighting the fact that people are opting to explore unchartered corners of their region.

It should come as no surprise then that in one of our biggest states, Western Australia, 73 per cent of residents visited another WA location for their last break. This compared to 69.4 per cent of people from NSW/ACT and 66.4 per cent from Queensland.

"Whether out of practicality (time or budgetary constraints, for example), or the result of state pride, 62.3 per cent of all Australians whose last holiday was domestic travelled to an intrastate destination in 2015. This is the highest proportion of home-state holiday-goers since 2011," Roy Morgan Research Group Account Director Angela Smith outlined.

Planning a winter road trip?

As winter draws closer, there will be many who are starting to make their plans for a road trip in the months ahead. Whether it is during the next school holidays or when you have some leave scheduled from work, it is good to escape the city and explore what Australia has to offer.

For the road trip to be a success, you will need to ensure that your car is well-prepared for the journey. As well as a first-aid kit and a phone charger, a 2015 article from Outside Online highlighted the importance of seat covers.

Citing the inherent messy affairs that road trips can become, seat covers protect from all forms of stains such as mud, coffee or blood. As most are machine-washable, seat covers can be a long-term solution for good vehicle interior tidiness.
