There are only a handful of iconic car nameplates in Australia that really get your blood pumping and without a question of a doubt, the Holden Monaro is one of them. This famous muscle car was produced in Australia from 1968 to 1977 and then re-launching for another modern production run between 2001-2006 which is a clear indication of the popularity of this car and its legendary status.
As with everything it all had to begin somewhere and in July of 1968 the Holden Monaro was introduced to Australia as a two door, pillarless hardtop coupe which was available in three different versions, the basic coupe, the GTS coupe and the exclusive GTS327 coupe. The GTS327 coupe was far and away a winner in the hearts and minds of the Australian public. With its powerful Chevrolet 327 cubic inch V8 engine and array of bright paint options including the classy black racing stripes, this was the car that any red-blooded bloke wanted to own and was a sure sign of things to come from this range.
Like the commercials of the day preached, the Monaro was Australia's first sports machine and it would prove to live up to its hype. The proving ground for any model over the last five decades has been the famous Mount Panorama circuit at Bathurst, New South Wales and the Monaro turned up at the 1968 Hardie-Ferodo 500 with a point to prove and it did just that. The HK Monaro became the first of Holden's many victories at Bathurst with Bruce McPhee and Barry Mullholland steering the GTS327 to pole position, the fastest lap and outright victory when it was all done and dusted.
